2010-2011 NJASK Information from the Dept. of Ed.

With the test quickly approaching, I thought that I would share the information that the state has provided for what to expect on this year's test.  First of all, the dates would be May 3-6 for Grades 6-8 and May 9-13 for Grades 3-5.

Below the cut, I will briefly explain what the students should expect in the upcoming weeks, according to the NJDoE.
Reading
  • NJASK 3-5: 3 Reading passages per grade level  (30 minutes each)
  • NJASK 6-8: 4 Reading passages per grade level  (52 minutes each)
Readings will include literature and informational text from a wide array of sources

Writing
  • No picture prompts for any grade at all
  • Expect possibilities at Explanatory, Expository, Speculative, or Persuasive along with other new writing prompts.  These could include quote responses or really any other type of writing.
  • The way it has been presented, students should not feel like they have prepared for EVERY prompt type, but their experiences in learning how to write will prepare them for ANY type of prompt.
  • NJASK 3-5: 2 writing prompts (speculative or expository) at 30 minutes each.
  • NJASK 6-8: 2 writing prompts.  One 45 minute persuasive prompt and one 30 minute explanatory or speculative prompt.
